Dedicated exclusively to the care of pregnant women and children up to the age of 18, each year it sees 160,000 patients. Even though it treats patients with conditions that are 17% more complex than the average in Spain, the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu has a lower mortality and readmission rate.
When it comes to paediatric diseases, the hospital is at the forefront in knowledge and treatment. It has state-of-the-art units for cardiac care, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, oncology, foetal medicine and ophthalmology. It also well-known for highly specialised areas such as epilepsy surgery, bone marrow transplant and diagnosis, care and research of rare diseases.
A research programme specialising in children and youth places Sant Joan de Déu Hospital among the four most important in Europe, with an avant-garde paediatric clinical trials unit and a tissue and tumour bank. The most notable lines of research are focused on paediatric oncology and its molecular biology, rare diseases, disorders originating in utero and infectious diseases.

For international patients, care is provided by the Paediatric Institute’s International Services. This department is made up of a multilingual team dedicated exclusively to the care of families arriving from outside of Spain. Its function is to accompany families throughout the process and facilitate their stay at the hospital.
